What is Tarot?

Tarot is a deck of 78 cards divided into two sections: the Major Arcana (22 cards) representing universal forces and life lessons, and the Minor Arcana (56 cards) reflecting everyday situations, emotions, and events. Each card carries its own symbolism, read according to its position (upright or reversed) and its relationship to the surrounding cards in the spread.

The most widely used deck today is the Rider-Waite-Smith, published in 1909, notable for its detailed illustrations on every card, a departure from earlier decks that used only numerical symbols. Thousands of variations have since been created, but the core system of meanings remains intact.

The Four Suits of the Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana is made up of 4 suits, each containing 14 cards (Ace through 10, Page, Knight, Queen, King). Each suit governs a distinct area of human experience.

🔥
Wands

💧

🌱
Pentacles
Earth, material reality, money, and health. Connected to finances, work, the physical body, and tangible outcomes.

The 22 Major Arcana and the Fool's Journey

The Major Arcana begins with card 0 (The Fool) and ends with card 21 (The World). This sequence is often called "The Fool's Journey": from naive innocence through lessons of power, love, death, and rebirth, until a state of wholeness is reached.

When a Major Arcana card appears in a spread, it typically points to larger forces at work, such as karmic lessons, turning points, or defining themes in a person's life. Minor Arcana cards, by contrast, reflect the day-to-day events and emotions that can be actively shaped by one's own choices.

Upright and Reversed Cards

Upright
The card's energy is flowing outward and expressing itself clearly. This doesn't always mean positive. The Tower upright still signals sudden collapse. It simply means the energy is active and visible.
Reversed
The energy is blocked, turned inward, delayed, or in the process of recovering. Some readers work only with upright cards; others include reversals for additional nuance. Neither approach is more correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Tarot accurately predict the future?
Tarot does not offer a fixed or single version of the future. The cards reflect current energies and tendencies, and the future shifts as actions and awareness shift. Tarot's role is to illuminate what is already in motion, not to deliver a verdict on what will happen.
How often should I do a reading?
There's no strict rule. Many people pull one card each morning for daily focus, or do a full reading when facing an important decision. That said, repeating the same question multiple times in one day tends to produce little value, since the cards reflect a current state and that state needs time to change.
Does a reversed card mean something bad?
Not necessarily. A reversed card usually indicates blocked energy, something turned inward, or a period of transition. A card that's challenging upright, like The Tower or Five of Swords, can carry a more constructive meaning when reversed, depending on the rest of the spread.
How should I phrase my question for a clear reading?
Open questions tend to produce more useful readings than yes/no ones. Instead of "Does he love me?", try "What is shaping this relationship right now?" The second framing gives the cards room to reveal more layers. Questions focused on your own situation rather than another person's behavior tend to be the most actionable.
What's the difference between Major and Minor Arcana in a spread?
A spread heavy with Major Arcana cards often signals a significant turning point, with larger forces at play that go beyond ordinary daily choices. When Minor Arcana dominates, the situation tends to depend more on the person's own day-to-day decisions and actions.
